Travelling As a Gentle Soul

For the past 12 months I have been  doing freelance travel writing. I left my home behind, sold everything and left to explore the world.

This has lead me on another adventure called …..

Diary of a gentle traveller

This is my musings from a gentle little fella following the stars in the sky tripping around our beautiful planet.

I tend to stay in areas nestled in quite neighbourhoods. I tend to stay away from crowds and large tourist areas. Rather, I prefer spending my time living with the locals and getting to immerse myself in their culture.

Personally I find when I stay in populated tourist areas I feel that I am just living back home. And I can just stay there. It would be cheaper…well sort of. Seeing the same faces and hearing the same language and for the most part hearing them talk about the same thing bores me. Nothing against doing this if this is what you like. There is comfort in this. I mean you are already placing yourself outside your comfort zone by getting on a plane and travelling for 10 hours. Then to land yourself in a foreign place where you can’t speak the language or maybe even read the signs can be very overhelming.

The true art of travelling is immersion. Placing yourself in the heart of a neighbourhood where there might be few tourists and hearing the locals talk and seeing how they interact is like a fast track into living in that country.

You pick up the mannerism of that country very quickly. It might be a gentle nod and smile as a way to say ‘hi’. It may be the way you say ‘thank you’ or a polite way to acknolowedge people around you.

All these little quirks are what make that country, and the people beautiful.  Placing yourself in the middle of their culture is an amazing way to see more and learn more about the country and the culture.

I find experiencing their daily life far more interesting than ticking a ‘must-do’ off my travel bucket list.
